Kahukura is an unschooling Mother of two from Aotearoa New Zealand and the person behind the Facebook page More Than One Neurotype; a page that blew up to over 25,000 followers in the first year.
"As someone who went through the majority of my life without knowing the reason I had always felt different, I am particularly passionate about embracing an Autistic identity as a means of counteracting a society that often doesn't accept different ways of being."
Like many other Autistic people, educating and sharing has become a passion of mine and I enjoy being part of creating a greater understanding and acceptance of neurodivergence.
I started More Than One Neurotype when I was a self-identified autistic, and part of that was to show others that you don't need a formal diagnosis to know who you are. We can stand in our autistic identity without someone giving us permission, and doing so can bring us a lot of relief and sense of peace.I see what I offer in my advocacy work as a beginning and a conversation starter.
I want to capture the attention of those who this experience is new for, and start them on their path to listening to the voices of the Neurodivergent community. I consider this to be the true source of wisdom and knowledge. Listening to other advocates sharing their stories is how I discovered my own identity, and so I know first hand just how helpful peer support and community can be.
